Alzheimer's disease is a disease that is becoming more and more common worldwide.

The disease is characterized by progressive dementia , memory disorders and intellectual ability disorders, which are associated with irreversible brain damage.

A research team has looked for ways to prevent the disease, including one of the possible solutions - the daily intake of vitamins .

For the purposes of the study, 2,262 people with an average age of 73 without symptoms and diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease at the start of the study participated.

The participants were then divided into four groups, depending on the supplements taken:

  • The first group took only  multivitamins;
  • The second group took  cocoa extract;
  • The third group took a combination of  multivitamins and cocoa extract;
  • The fourth group received a placebo;

All participants took the supplements daily for three years.

After that, tests were done every year to assess their cognitive abilities and especially memory .

The results showed that two years after the start of the study, the participants who took the multivitamin had a significant improvement in memory and executive function, compared to the other participants.

Executive functions are the totality of mental activities we perform to control our behavior, emotions, and thoughts.

After two years, those who took the multivitamin had a significant improvement in memory and executive function, but they also had a 60% lower risk of cognitive decline , equating to a mental health trade-off of up to 1 ,8 years.

Scientists have found that the intake of cocoa extract  had no effect on slowing mental aging in the participants.

Cocoa extract does not have a particularly positive effect on mental activity.

The daily intake of multivitamins resulted in a significant improvement in mental performance in participants compared to those who took a placebo.

Remarkably, this effect was even more significant in patients who had a history of cardiovascular disease.
