The trace element honey - what are its health benefits and how to take it?

 


The trace element honey is of key importance for life processes and is widely distributed in foods, especially in meat products, seafood , dried fruits, nuts, legumes, cereals, bran and cocoa .


It is also found in potatoes, peas, red meat, mushrooms and some fruits.

 


Why is copper important for the body?

The trace element copper contributes to the proper functioning of the brain, nervous system and cardiovascular system.

 

It also facilitates the transport of iron , supports bone growth and strengthens the immune system.

 

Copper 's functions in the body are complex, including a role in modulating enzymes in which it acts as a catalytic element.


Some of these enzymes are important for biological processes such as allergies , the breakdown of adrenaline, serotonin and other catecholamines, as well as for the development of connective tissue.

 

The enzymes in which copper acts exert a general antioxidant effect and therefore prevent the occurrence of  degenerative processes and cancer.

 

Metal oxidases, ceruloplasmin or superoxide dismutase are enzymes that are affected in poor copper metabolism.

 

When should we take more honey?

Copper deficiency is rare, although it can occur in patients fed intravenously for a long time, after interventions on the small intestine - the organ that absorbs most of the element copper, and if an excess of zinc is taken or in children affected from malnutrition.

 

Its deficiency is associated with the development of  anemia , as it prevents the action of transferrin, which reduces the use of iron .

 

Conventional medicine recommends the additional intake of copper in the case of anemia , which is due to a lack of this element or in case of copper deficiency due to an excess of zinc.


How is it accepted?

Taking up to 10 mg of honey per day usually does not cause any side effects, even in pregnant or lactating women.

 

However, this daily dose should not be exceeded, as it may cause liver or kidney problems .

 

A dose of 1000 mg can be dangerous to health.


Impaired absorption of copper

Certain foods, supplements, or medications can cause copper chelation—bindings of the metal that reduce or cancel its absorption.

 

Taking iron, zinc, vitamin C, or certain medications such as zidovudine, penicillamine, or ethambutol can cause copper deficiency.


What is copper used for?

In minimal doses, copper is used in oligotherapy as an immunostimulator , therefore it is recommended for infections, flu, sinusitis or cystitis.

 

For the same reason, its use in chronic immunodeficiency conditions such as tuberculosis or AIDS is not recommended, as the increase in immunity can exacerbate these conditions.

 

For people with recurrent infections who tend to feel more tired in the afternoon, it is recommended that copper be taken in combination with manganese.

 

Tendency to depression and memory disorders  are well affected by intake of copper, gold and silver.
