Green tea extract , which comes in several forms, including powder, is made from the leaves of the botanical tea Camellia sinensis . Although several other types of tea are also derived from the same plant—black, white, and oolong—green tea is known as the least processed of the bunch, retaining more of its valuable, healthy properties.
Used for cosmetic purposes, green tea extract is known to show effects that help reduce signs of aging, such as wrinkles and fine lines. It is commonly used as a valuable ingredient in face washes, moisturizers, serums, and other skin care products that act to soothe irrita
tion, even out skin discoloration, protect skin from UV radiation, soothe redness and swelling, and damage prevention.
Products enriched with green tea extracts are known to further support skin health by moisturizing, stimulating circulation and regulating sebum production, thus showing a positive effect on the overall tone, texture, strength and resilience of the skin. It is particularly beneficial for skin suffering from discomfort associated with acne, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea and other conditions characterized by dryness, itching, inflammation and irritation.
Its antimicrobial and astringent properties, along with its ability to balance oil production in the skin and minimize the appearance of enlarged pores, make green tea extract ideal for use in products that target acne breakouts.
Its exfoliating property helps reduce the appearance of blackheads while eliminating dead skin, dirt, bacteria and other pollutants on the skin's surface, thus promoting skin cell rejuvenation and renewal. Applied under the eyes, products with green tea extract are believed to reduce puffiness while helping to reduce the appearance of dark circles.
Cellulite is a common condition that causes dimpling on certain parts of the body, such as the thighs and buttocks. Surprisingly, studies show that the caffeine in green tea can actually help reduce the appearance of cellulite. When applied topically, it can suppress the oil build-up in the skin that causes the condition.
Green tea extract may also play a role in preventing the formation of cellulite, but more research is needed to confirm effectiveness.
Studies show that the polyphenols in green tea may have anti-cancer properties for the skin. Green tea has been shown to inhibit DNA damage, protect against harmful UV rays from the sun, and even inhibit tumor growth.
